Product Description: Students comprise the largest and most culturally diverse segment of the library staff at many academic institutions. Library visitors’initial contact is often with a student employee. As a result, the interaction of student employees with library users frequently serves as a basis for patron opinion of the library. Libraries and Student Assistants professes the value of the contributions that student assistants make to libraries. It stresses the importance of recognizing the potential benefits, possible challenges, and major issues related to hiring, training, motivating, and utilizing students in libraries.

In Libraries and Student Assistants, Editor William K. Black brings together chapters which may revolutionize the thinking of librarians who question the importance of student assistants in their libraries. The chapters assess the roles and examine the perspectives and expectations of both librarians and student assistants in order to improve relations and maximize student performance. Topics covered include:
  • the history of the evolving role of student employees in academic libraries
  • recruiting, hiring, and assessing student workers in academic libraries
  • the student perspective
  • motivating and rewarding student workers
  • the international perspective of student assistants in libraries
  • other helpful references and readings

Libraries and Student Assistants provides a broad view of the role and importance of student assistants. Students who combine work and class instruction must balance job demands and academic expectations. While librarians as employers must understand the multiple roles that students are expected to assume, they also have the responsibility of maintaining effective organizations. This is achieved through offering a broad-based, responsive, and efficient service, as well as providing student assistants with a positive work experience and essential job skills.

Librarians who supervise, manage, or frequently work with student employees will find Libraries and Student Assistants to be an essential reference for utilizing student employees and for dealing with specific problems which may arise. Students are often a critical element in the role libraries play; it is of paramount importance that supervisors, managers, and other employees provide them with quality training, effective work skills, clear performance expectations, and an understanding work environment.
