Product Description: This Manual is designed as a concise and practical clinical tool for evaluating the child or adolescent that is a sexual offender. It fills an important gap in the literature on the treatment of sexual offenders. The text utilizes case studies to illustrate sexual offender diagnostic categories and level of risk assessment procedures. The overall content of the book is especially designed to provide a comprehensible system for enhancing the design of diagnosis and treatment programs. Variables related to types of sexual offenses are clarified, and the coding for levels of risk and classifications of sexual offenses are clearly stated with a focus on applicability in a variety of settings and with a variety of sexual offending youngsters. The Manual also contains a comprehensive child and adolescent sexual offender assessment instrument (procedure) as well as examples of clinical reports of child and adolescent sexual offender evaluation results. Some of the case studies are quite explicit. The need for this Manual is clear. Within the last two decades the acknowledgment of children as victims of sexual abuse has evolved significantly. Previously, traumatic events, affecting the lives of countless children have been historically minimized or ignored. In recent decades these phenomena have become a focus of diagnostic as well as clinical research interest for several professional disciplines. In addition, this increased level of professional attention has resulted in an abundance of clinically based scholarly articles and books addressing the topic of child sexual abuse victimization as not only a mental health issue but also as societal and legal issues as well. Despite the increased acceptance (and subsequent clinical focus on children as victims of sexual abuse) the study of children as perpetrators of sexual offenses has remained inadequate. This inadequacy has not only resulted in a scarcity of clinically-based professional publications discussing the child or adolescent as a sexual offender but also has resulted in a deficiency of clinical research inquiry into the diagnosis and level of risk assessment for children and adolescent sexual perpetrators. This lack of publications persists in spite of recent research findings that suggest that many adult sexual offenders of children actually began their sexual offenses while they themselves were minors. This Manual is designed to fill this important gap in the literature. It provides clinicians with an established diagnostic method with which to classify types of sexual offending children and clinical categories of sexual offending behaviors in children and adolescents. It gives guidance for mental health professionals when designing and implementing treatment programs for child and juvenile sexual offenders. The Manual describes 1) A clinical method by which the child or adolescent sexual offender and their sexual offenses could be diagnostically categorized (thus expediting the development of an appropriate treatment program while significantly enhancing the validity of level of risk assessments); and 2) An established clinical evaluation method which provides greater clarity for professionals who need to supply meaningful clinical information concerning the sexual offending youngster to relevant parties. (Relevant parties could include the child or juvenile offender themselves, the sexual offender's family members or legal guardians, additional treatment program providers, the victims and their families, and legal representatives.) The MANUAL FOR DIAGNOSTIC CLASSIFICATIONS AND AT RISK ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WHO COMMIT SEXUAL OFFENSES is a concise and practical clinical guide for evaluating child and adolescent sexual offenders.
